The History of LinkWorld - The Dunes
The Dunes in the Imperial County are known for their resemblance to the Sahara Desert. It is the largest area of dunes in the Western Hemisphere. The dunes provided the perfect location where desert scenes for movies such as The Empire Strikes Back, The English Patient and Star Wars: The Phantom Menace were shot.
The landscape and flora of the Dunes was modeled from images taken by Carol Kerney, and from images drawn from UC Berkeley's CalPhotos database (part of UCB's Digital Library Project). Since the designers of LinkWorld were located in the U.K., all of the information needed to be provided in photographs or on the web.
The Dunes area of LinkWorld includes a small gallery with more images of the Dunes and a meeting room filled with resources where private sessions can take place between counselors, tutors, mentors and students from the Borderlink Project.
